Are You A Couch Potato?

Your sedentary lifestyle is your biggest enemy today. It doesn’t matter if you hit the gym for those 30 minutes but spend the rest of your day gorging on junk food and lazing around. Your day to day activities have a lasting effect on your health. Not just that, inactivity for hours, multiplied by days and months, could leave you with dire consequences.
Technology enabled us to do things with just a push of a button, but complete dependency could harm you in more ways than one. Wondering how? You might take the lift or escalator instead of the staircase; you’d rather browse the internet and chat with your friends virtually instead of going out and meeting them in person; you prefer playing video games instead of playing cricket in the field; you always order food for delivery or takeaway instead of cooking. You get the drift, don’t you?
Believe it or not, studies have shown that sedentary lifestyles equal to low life expectancy. You’re at a higher risk of becoming obese, with an increase in blood pressure levels. And what follows are a series of ailments.
While most of the jobs these days require you to sit and work for hours at a stretch, it’s best to get up from your seat after an hour and take a walk across the office. Or you could simply write two out of five emails while standing. Try doing these for three to four days, and by the fifth day you’ll find it difficult to just sit and work.
When at home, make sure you dance to a few of your favourite tunes while your clothes are being washed in the washing machine. Or buy a stationary bike (it will be a one-time investment for fruitful results concerning your fitness) and pedal it while watching TV.
Fuse in these activities in your daily routine and do away with the lazy bone in your body. Club that with healthy eating habits and reclaim your life. Be fit to live a long life, a life which allows you to do more with every passing day. So get up, and get active!
And while you get going with a much more active life, remember to eat healthy for sustained stamina. Hence, for more on nutrition and healthy living, get in touch with the specialists and experts at Max Healthcare

Not happy with the way your nose looks like? We can help.

In this post, we’ll discuss Rhinoplasty, and how it can help you reshape your nose. Let’s first understand what Rhinoplasty (also called Nose Surgery) is all about.
Definition –
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure, which can shorten or lengthen your nose. It can, therefore, change the shape and contour of your nose; the procedure can also lift or define your tip.
The upper section of your nose is bone, and the lower section is cartilage. Your surgeon will work on bone, cartilage, or both so as to ensure the best results for you.
Put simply, Rhinoplasty can do the following for you:
  • Shorten or lengthen your nose
  • Straighten the bridge of your nose
  • Reshape the tip of your nose
  • Change the angle between your nose and upper lip
So, what are the risks involved?
  • Scarring
  • Swelling in and around the nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Recurring nosebleeds
  • Pain and discoloration
We suggest you to sit with your surgeon at Max Healthcare to understand all the risks involved so that you can make an informed decision.
Medical History, Physical Exam, and Photographs
Your medical history will be reviewed by the specialist; if you have blood disorders such as Hemophilia, you may not qualify as an ideal candidate for the Rhinoplasty surgery.
A physical examination will be carried out, which may involve inspecting your skin and the inside and outside of your nose.
Someone from the doctor’s office will take several photographs of your nose from different angels. These photos help in many ways, including before and after assessment, and reference during the nose reshaping procedure.

Gastric bypass surgery and you

About Gastric Bypass Surgery:

GASTRIC BYPASS surgery is a weight loss surgery, and does two things: 1. it reduces your stomach’s size, 2. it creates a bypass so that your digestive system absorbs less nutrients.
Most of the bariatric surgeries are now done laparoscopically rather than using the traditional, long cuts. Laparoscope is a tiny, tubular instrument with a camera attached. The camera at the tip of laparoscope helps surgeons see and operate on your stomach.

How is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?
First things first, surgeons operate on your stomach, and drastically reduce its size. This surgery creates a new stomach, which is much smaller than the original one.
Second, they cut the small intestine, and sew parts of it directly onto the pouch (your surgically created stomach).
Whatever you eat and drink post-procedure goes into the pouch (newly created stomach) and then into the small intestine, bypassing a large part of your stomach and the first section of the small intestine. So, this way, you eat less and you absorb less. This is gastric bypass surgery.
Weight loss surgeries, like gastric bypass can provide long-term weight loss. The amount of weight you lose depends on many factors, including your type of surgery and your lifestyle habits post-surgery.
In addition to weight loss, gastric bypass surgery may improve or resolve conditions often related to being overweight, including:
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Severe sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes
A weight loss surgery can also improve your ability to perform the daily activities of your life, which could help improve your quality of life.

There is more to familial cancer than Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy. Take a deep breath and read on

If you have no idea about familial cancer, it is cancer that one is likely to inherit from one’s family. So, if one has a strong family history of cancer, the person is likely to get affected. Angelina Jolie too were worried about this inhering-cancer-from-family thing, and got herself tested.
Turned out, she was at a very high risk of developing breast as well as ovarian cancer (Ovarian cancer is a cancerous growth arising from the ovary. The ovary is an ovum-producing reproductive organ, often found in pairs as part of the vertebrate female reproductive system). Surgery was found to be the best thing that she could do to reduce her chances of developing cancer. So, she underwent double mastectomy, which refers to the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely; her chances of developing breast cancer have now dropped from 87% to under 5%.
In the New York Times op-ed where Jolie first spoke about her surgery, she talked about the “faulty” gene that can cause both breast and ovarian cancer. However, the genes are not to be blamed; in fact, these genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) help stop cancers from developing. As a matter of fact, everyone has two copies of BRCA1 and BRCA2; it’s only when one of the copies has some sort of fault and doesn’t work, the person faces a high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
Is there anything for you here?
If you’re worried about the risk of developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer because of a family history of cancer, you should immediately discuss this with your doctor. He/she may refer you to a Familial Cancer Centre. Services that a Familial Cancer Centre offers typically include testing, medical advice, counseling, and support.
The specialists will go through your family history; based on the tests, you'll be given an estimate of your inherited risk of cancer. Follow-up and options for early detection and prevention will be discussed.
Your first appointment may last for an hour. You may need to visit the centre more than once.
At, Max Healthcare we’ve state-of-the-art facilities and best of doctors for familial cancer. Book an appointment now!

An Overview of Joint Replacement Surgery

A joint replacement surgery is suggested by the doctors when there is severe damage to the joints, bones, adjoining muscles or tissues. The most common areas of this surgery are ankles, elbows, shoulders and fingers. When the joints wear away due to age or get swollen due to certain injuries then symptoms like stress, trauma, pain, stiffness and swelling are quiet natural. Unfortunately these symptoms worsen with time and in a lot of cases a surgery is required!
This surgery is only recommended by the doctors when all other treatment options have failed to respond. A surgical treatment is most often the last option in cases where the pain has aggravated, or the movements have become quiet restricted. Only a doctor can detect whether the condition is severe enough or not to go for a replacement surgery. Usually doctors first try for various alternative methods like medication, braces and aids. But if the pain does not subside down and if the movement has become very restricted then a surgery is suggested.
This kind of surgery has been performed on a lot of people and it has a high success ratio. In a joint replacement surgery the affected or damaged joint is replaced with prosthesis or an artificial joint. The artificial joint that would be used is made up of materials like plastic or metal. This artificial joint is then implanted into the affected part so that the new bone can develop and grow inside it.
When the inflamed joint is replaced with an artificial joint then it reduces the pain, increases the level of mobility and also improves the quality of life of the individual. In older people the new joints are cemented while in younger people there is no requirement for any kind of cementing as they are very active. After the surgery the new joint that has been implanted has a life span of 10-15 years. So the younger people may require getting this surgery more often!
While this surgery is being done the most important thing that must be considered is the positioning of the new joint. Improper positioning of the new joint can lead to wear and tear and loosening of the new joint easily. This is the reason why surgeons are extra careful while performing this surgery. Now with the advancement in technology the doctors can ensure the exact positioning of the new joints. A computer assisted surgery would ensure the exact positioning of the replaced implants.
Joint replacement surgery is a long procedure and is carried out under the supervision of a general anesthetist. The recovery of the patients is dependent on the patient as to how well they respond to the surgery. Patients need to follow the guidelines prescribed by the surgeon in terms of rest, recuperation, diet and exercise. After the total recovery, the patient gets relief from pain and also becomes mobile after some sessions of physiotherapy. Consult the surgeons of Max Healthcare for further information on joint replacement surgery.
