Donate your eyes

Eye Donation is a beautiful way to do some good for the humankind. Donate your eyes; take a pledge to be kind to those who do not have the power or ability to see, for those who are blinded unfortunately.

To donate eyes, you need to be above eighteen years of age. Anyone who is above eighteen years can donate eyes. Sex, blood group, region, religion are not determinant factors when some one decides to donate eyes. People who wear spectacles or people who have undergone surgery like cataract are also fit to donate eyes! Those who suffer from blindness because of any retinal and optic nerve disease can also pledge to donate eyes as long as their cornea is alright. Patients with hypertension, diabetes etc. are also good candidates to donate eyes.

In order to donate eyes of the deceased, the family members are just required to contact nearest Eye Bank as soon as possible (within 6 hours of the event of death). The family members are supposed to close the donor’s eyes and switch the fan off. The AC/Cooler needs to be running and wet cotton needs to be put onto the closed eyelids. The donor’s head needs to be kept raised using a pillow till the Eye Bank reaches the site of donation. The process of eye donation is done with the donor’s kin’s written consent along with two eye witnesses.

Gift someone a vision

Ability to see is one of the greatest gifts from God to mankind. Eyes and ability to see things are priceless. Humankind is, therefore, obliged to take care of the nature’s gift- eyes. Each one of us should take care of our eyes and appreciate our ability to see as not everyone is blessed with the ability to see. Donate your eyes. Do good for those who are not as blessed as you, for those who can not see the world around!

Eyedonation involves donating a person’s eyes after his/her death with proper consent of the person’s family! People who are unable to see because of the corneal disease really benefit from this process of eye donation. Cornea, the clear tissue and the focusing element of eyes drastically reduces or hampers vision totally, incase it becomes cloudy. This condition of cornea and vision is called corneal disease.
There are many factors resulting in corneal disease like eye infections, injuries, mal-nutrition during childhood & hereditary diseases. Through surgery, a damaged cornea can be replaced by a healthy (donor) cornea and blindness of the patient can be cured. The cornea is the only part that is transplanted through surgery and the remaining eye is used to carry on research and further education.

Come to Max Healthcare and donate your eyes to help someone see the world around. Donating the eyes is a great way to do your bit towards the humanity. Gift someone a vision for life. Help someone to fulfill his/her dreams by pledging your eyes for donation at Max Eye Care.

Important things to know about breast-feeding

Breastfeeding is one of the most satisfying experiences for any mother. Breast-fed babies have a higher IQ than others. Breast-feeding decreases possibility of diarrhea in babies greatly and helps in creating a special bond between mother and child.

At the 3rd and 4th day after the childbirth, the flow of breast milk increases. The mother may feel slight pain and heaviness in her breasts. This state is referred to as engorgement. Engorgement would last for a few initial days and in order to ease the pain, the mother sometimes has to manually and sometimes using a pump empty her breast.

New mothers often wonder if they are producing good amount of milk for their babies or not. The way to guage it is simple, that is, if a child sleeps for two to three hours after having the feed, it is indicative of the fact that the child is well-fed and the milk being produced is of optimum quantity. Also, if your child is wetting 6-8 nappies per day and is gaining 150 grams of weight per week from the tenth day onwards, the milk and feed that your child is getting is enough. If the baby’s stool changes from black to yellow in colour in the first five days of its birth; the amount of milk being produced is good enough.

Know your child’s condition and well-being, stay informed. Come to Max Institute of Paediatrics to know what’s best for your child. We wish you a happy parenthood!

Make sure you are doing the right thing for your baby

Taking your baby home for the first time? Make sure you are well aware. Remember, when it comes to your baby, even little things matter.

Be cautious about those nappy rashes that your child may develop. Do not ignore nappy rashes as they cause discomfort to your baby and may make it irritable and cranky. Nappy rashes occur due to high frequency of skin contact with stools and urine. Make sure that you use disposable nappy for your baby which is not only high quality but are also soft in texture to ensure baby’s comfort. Using simple Vaseline on your baby’s skin to prevent direct contact of skin to the nappy would help greatly to prevent rashes on your child’s skin. You can apply a zinc oxide based cream, incase, your child develops rashes. Use the nappy creams very liberally and frequently. Do not use talcum powder around the nappy area. If you notice that rash/es are not getting better, then, you must contact your doctor immediately.

Another thing that is extremely important is to massage your baby. One of the most common mistakes that new mothers make is massaging their baby everyday using mustard oil and home made ghee or curd. The reason behind this is the age old superstitions that surround childcare in India; indeed childcare is important, but it is not always beneficial to use non-tested and non-recommended methods of childcare that carry on the basis of nothing but belief. Avoid massaging your child everyday and do not use almond oil, mustard oil, ghee, curd etc.

Visit Max Institute of Paediatrics to know more about childcare. Trust only Max Institute of Paediatrics to ensure comprehensive, compassionate and affectionate childcare facilities and tips. Make sure you are doing the right thing for your baby!

Keep a tab on your newborn’s health

When you take your baby home for the first time, there are some of the things that you need to take care of.

Firstly, pay attention to breast-feeding. Make sure that the whole of your areola is in the baby’s mouth when it is feeding. If your baby sleeps for 2-3 hours after the feed then it indicates that your baby is well-fed and your milk is enough. However, if your baby wakes up, is suckling, is irritable after every half an hour, then your milk is not enough. Since cow’s milk is not recommendable in the first year of the child’s life, make sure that you consult your doctor to have a proper solution to the problem.

Keep a tab on the jaundice level of your baby. It is seen that about 50% of newborns suffer from jaundice. Make sure that you know about your child’s condition and that you do not miss any of the recommended OPD visits for your child.

Also, make sure that your baby’s stools do not contain any kind of mucus or blood in them. A healthy baby passes stools as many as 8-10 (or less) times per day. Make sure that your baby is doing well, if there is any kind of mucus or blood that you may suspect, immediately consult your paediatrician. Mucus or blood may be the result of stomach infection; newborns are prone to infections and therefore, they may catch stomach infection extremely easily!

MaxInstitute of Paediatrics is a unique gateway to childcare. It’s a super speciality, one stop facility that helps you through your childcare. You can rely on Max for a compassionate and dedicated care for your child.

Put a brave front and fight Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is found only in men. The cancer develops in the prostate gland which is a part of the male reproductive system and grows very slowly. Prostate gland is as small as the size of a walnut and is located near the rectum, below the bladder.

There are many types of cells in the prostate while prostate cancer stems and occurs in the gland cells. The gland cells produce the prostate fluid which further gets added to the semen. Cancer that develops in the gland cells is called Adenocarcinoma. Other rare types of cancers found in the gland cells include Small Cell Carcinomas, Transitional Cell Carcinomas and Sarcomas.
Prostate Specific-Antigen (blood test) and Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) are two ways to detect the presence of prostate cancer. Prostate Specific-Antigen is made by normal cells and cancer cells. PSA is found in semen as well as in the blood. The higher the level of the PSA, higher is the chance to catch prostate cancer. The PSA level may also increase as a result of enlargement of prostate (non-cancerous) in men as they get older (the condition is medically referred) , age and as a consequence to prostatitis which causes infection and inflammation in the prostate.
Incase of Digital Rectal Exam, the doctor inserts a well-lubricated finger in the prostate to detect any lumps or hardness in the prostate. Most of the cancers develop in back part of the prostate and can be detected during a DRE.
Neither the PSA nor the DRE screening is 100% accurate; however are primary methods to detect prostate cancer. Further screening and tests are required incase the results of either of the tests are abnormal. Therefore, it is important to stay informed and trust the specialized doctors at Max Cancer Centre. Keep yourself informed and put a brave front to cancer with the help of the expert team at Max Cancer Centre.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammoplasty. It involves removal of breast tissue and reshaping of skin to reduce the size of the breasts.

Breast reduction is done incase one suffers from back aches and neck pains. Incase one is unable to breathe properly and one has stasis ulcers, grooves in the shoulders due to the bra straps, numbness in any portion of the breasts and the chest area due to the excessive weight, breast reduction becomes a recommended option. Breast reduction also serves a purely aesthetic purpose for people who dislike their breast size and wish to have perfect looking breasts. Physical discomfort and psychological problems due to one’s appearance are the reasons that people go through breast reduction for.

Women who choose to undergo breast reduction should have realistic expectations from the surgery. Lactating mother or women intend to breast feed should not go for breast reduction. Women who have undiagnosed lumps or masses in breasts, are severely obese, irregular mammograms, are diabetic, have blood clotting disorders, and have wound healing disorders are not candidates fit enough to undergo breast reduction. Lactating mothers, smokers and women suffering from circulatory disorders are not at all good candidates.

Preparatory guidelines are given to the patients by the surgeon prior to the surgery. During the surgery, excess of glandular tissue and fat is removed. The nipple is moved to a new position, skin from the breast sides are brought down around the areola and a rounded contour of the breast is created.

About Blepharoplasty

With increasing age, excess of skin gets formed around the eyes and the skin also loses elasticity. Fatty tissues get accumulated under the skin and the eyes start to look older due to the appearance of wrinkles and puffs around the eyes. Sometimes genetic factors and body behaviour may cause effects of aging in people. Plastic surgery, in such a scenario, helps in restoring a youthful appearance to the eyes. Blepharoplasty is a process using which excess of fat, skin and muscle from the eyelids are removed.

Physically healthy and emotionally stable people are the best candidates for this kind of a surgery. Patient choosing blepharoplasty should be at least 35 years of age. People having dry eye, hypothyroidism, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma should not go for this procedure.
Sometimes people also go for alternative treatments like going for chemical and laser treatments for wrinkles, forehead or eyebrow lift to give a better appearance to the area around the eye.

For blepharoplasty, the patients are usually briefed about their eating and drinking habits inorder to facilitate a smooth surgery. Prior to the surgery, patients are asked to avoid certain medications like aspirin and Vitamin E.
Local anesthesia is usually used during the eyelid surgery. Anesthesia and oral sedatives numbs surrounding area of the eyes, making the patient relaxed and insensitive to the pain.

The entire procedure takes from one to three hours to complete in total. However, the procedure is delicate which should be carried out by experts. At Max Institute of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, patients are given precise treatment and expert advice to take care post-surgery. At Max, the process of treatment and surgery is made smooth by dedicated and renowned doctors.
