Keep a tab on your newborn’s health

When you take your baby home for the first time, there are some of the things that you need to take care of.

Firstly, pay attention to breast-feeding. Make sure that the whole of your areola is in the baby’s mouth when it is feeding. If your baby sleeps for 2-3 hours after the feed then it indicates that your baby is well-fed and your milk is enough. However, if your baby wakes up, is suckling, is irritable after every half an hour, then your milk is not enough. Since cow’s milk is not recommendable in the first year of the child’s life, make sure that you consult your doctor to have a proper solution to the problem.

Keep a tab on the jaundice level of your baby. It is seen that about 50% of newborns suffer from jaundice. Make sure that you know about your child’s condition and that you do not miss any of the recommended OPD visits for your child.

Also, make sure that your baby’s stools do not contain any kind of mucus or blood in them. A healthy baby passes stools as many as 8-10 (or less) times per day. Make sure that your baby is doing well, if there is any kind of mucus or blood that you may suspect, immediately consult your paediatrician. Mucus or blood may be the result of stomach infection; newborns are prone to infections and therefore, they may catch stomach infection extremely easily!
