Heart and its health: a brief overview

Your heart is responsible for your life. Your heart resides at the center of your cardiovascular system. Right from providing the body with oxygen to pumping blood, human heart performs many vital functions. What you choose to eat and how much you exercise affects the overall health of the heart and the entire cardiovascular system.

Some of the issues that one needs to keep a constant tab on, include blood pressure levels, cholesterol levels etc. Blood pressure is a very important area which defines heart health. You must get your blood pressure checked and ensure that it is regulated. If you have a high blood pressure, you may be susceptible to hypertension which can affect your all over body mass. If the body mass is in excess, the heart has to work doubly hard in pumping blood through the whole of the body. If the heart starts working so hard, the arteries feel the pressure which may in turn put the blood vessels at a risk of damage. So, to make sure that your heart is healthy, you got to lower your body weight and keep your blood pressure in check.

To ensure a healthy heart, you must control the cholesterol levels too. There are two kinds of cholesterol, one is ‘bad’ cholesterol and the other is ‘good’ cholesterol. You must avoid foods with high saturated fat content as those can lead to a build-up in the bloodstream which can restrict blood flow in the body. Blood flow restriction can further put your heart at a risk of cardiovascular damage.

A healthy heart ensures good circulation of blood as well as oxygen in your body. To make sure that you take care of your heart, you must eat healthy (a diet full of vegetables, fruits and fibrous foods etc.) and get half an hour of exercise every day.

Fighting Cancer in the right manner

Life is sometimes strange and can give us reasons to be unhappy and unsettled. This holds true for most of us, but the ones who take out ways to remain happy come out as winners. We get only one life and it is absolutely imperative that we cherish and respect it. Fighting for a solution, inner peace & holistic happiness is the best teaching that any learned person or a religious book can offer to sustain life.

My friend’s father is the best example when it comes to someone who fought for his life till he lost the battle to death. He was suffering from cancer and could not get proper treatment at the right time. Still this did not stop him from smiling on his deathbed. He taught me the importance of being content and happy to leave this world in peace. It’s always painful to bid adieu, but if you manage to do that with a positive spirit, you are helping not only your own soul to rest in peace but doing a favour on your family and friends, so that they remember you for a longer time for your braveness and goodness.

Cancer treatment has different effects on different people. Since this disease is fatal, it is understood that patients afflicted with cancer are always looking for possible ways to cure this disease. There are millions of people all over the world who are living with cancer or have fought with cancer and succeeded to survive. Some patients fight it and are lucky to come out of cancer victoriously and some loose the battle. Modern medicine has evolved over the years and has discovered a lot of ways to treat and manage cancer. These medicines can save lives in few cases or atleast make lives more comfortable for cancer patients.

But there are few patients who either do not have the money for cancer treatment or do not have the correct knowledge and access about specialized cancer hospitals. If cancer is detected at an early stage, there are chances of survival. My friend’s father could have got a similar treatment if he had the right guidance and knowledge about possible treatment about cancer. A strong man lost the battle to the disease, but remains in our heart due to his strong willpower and a zest to live. I believe that we should all abide by a single preaching given by Bodhidharma, “Life and death are important, don’t suffer them in vain”.

Mohali Hospitals – Earning a Reputation in the field of Medicine

Being a marketing executive in a multinational pharmaceutical firm, I used to travel a lot. In fact, this is an inherent part of my job and I love my job very much. During the tenure of 3 years in this company, I not only travelled many foreign locations but also covered many of the Indian cities as well. In this way, I get exposure to different people, different cultures, different languages and many more elements.
Last month, I was on a business tour to Ajitgarh, formerly known as Mohali, in the state of Punjab. My objective was to meet some of the best medical centres in the city to market our products and services. Before leaving for the city, I was having a perception in my mind that it would be a small city with only 3-4 mid-size hospitals. But surprisingly my perception was completely wrong as it is a bit city and being adjacent to Chandigarh, this city has much more things than I thought.
Earlier known as Mohali, I came to known about this city during Cricket matches as the city has a world-level cricket stadium. Along with Chandigarh and Panchkula, Mohali forms a part of the Chandigarh Tricity. The city was earlier a part of the Rupnagar district, and was carved out into a separate district in the recent years.
Now come to the medical facilities available at Mohali hospitals. Being a part of Chandigarh Tricity, .Mohali boasts of some of the world-class hospitals such as Max Hospitals. All these hospitals are known for providing world-class health care services to the people of not only Chandigarh but the whole Punjab. People from different regions of the state come to the town to get exemplary medical services at affordable costs.
During my visit to these hospitals, I also get the opportunity to talk some of the patients and their attendants. They all are very much satisfied with the level of healthcare services being offered. I even met some foreigners who were there to find the right treatment at much lower cost. Now you can easily understand how the level of healthcare services has risen in the recent years. Today, Mohali is considered as a premier healthcare destination on the world map. Over the past few years, Mohali is equally contribution in the emergence of healthcare panorama in the country.

Can you really find the best cancer treatment in India?

For many people, India is home to majestic temples, mosques, rich culture, and humble people but when it comes to get world-class medical facilities; does India leave a lasting impact? This is a big question which has resurged in recent times as many eminent personalities have approach foreign hospitals for cancer treatment.

Our doctors claim that India is on par with international hospitals. Then why people go to abroad for treatments? Cricketer Yuvraj Sing has undergone cancer treatment in US. His mother claimed that doctors in India have given him wrong diagnoses. Similarly, one of the Bollywood actresses was in the US for cancer treatment. All these cases denote the fact India still lags behind when it comes to find the best cancer treatment. Is it still true?

However, our doctors have something different to day. They say that we offer same treatment as any other part of the world. Everything can be done in the topmost cancer centers across the globe can be done here in India. Doctors at Lilavati Hospital at Mumbai reiterate that cancer treatment in our country is equivalent and in some cases even better than the leading cancer hospitals in the world.

I spoke to doctor at Max Hospital, Delhi and they elucidate the truth further that latest drugs give in foreign hospitals are easily available here and if there is any delay, this would be not more than 2-3 months. There are hundreds of instances where foreign people are heading towards India for affordable yet superlative cancer treatment.

Many experts claim it is not the search for best cancer treatment why people go to abroad but the truth is that they don’t want people in India know about these disease. Patients tend to travel abroad but that only happens in the case of celebrities and they do it the sake of privacy. It is only the celebrities who can afford the extremely expensive cancer treatment abroad.

Doctors also mention another reason behind this difference. It is due to the poor doctor-to-patient ratio in the country. Being India a populous country, there are large numbers of cancer patients in the country compared to the doctors. This is probably because studying oncology takes a long time and MBBS students take up other specializations. Abroad, there are more doctors and fewer patients and maybe because of that, when people can afford to, they go abroad.

The overall analysis is that India is always a renowned centre for best cancer treatment in the world but there are many other factors that tend to degrade the level of medical facilities in the country.

A trip to Bathinda that changed my outlook

It is very natural for anyone to feel disturbed when a loved one undergoes any kind of pain. Love and support is all you can provide them along with arranging medical attention that can provide relief at the earliest.
My mother and I recently visited my aunt in Bathinda, one of the oldest towns of Punjab, named after the Bhati Rajput Kings. As her husband is stationed there in one of the thermal plants, she takes care of the house and provides tuition classes to school students residing in the neighborhood. This was my first visit to a small city in Punjab. Earlier I had only got an opportunity to visit Chandigarh, Amritsar and Ludhiana, which are all big cities with large roads, hospitals, movie theatres and malls.
The second day of our stay, my mother & aunt went shopping to some local market. As I was not feeling too well, I decided to stay home and watch T.V. I persuaded them to have a good time, shop and bond over coffee. I wish I knew that when I meet them next, happiness would be one thing surely out of the window.
In a couple of hours since they were gone, I finished watching two back to back movies and eating as much as I could find. With no sign of their whereabouts for four hours, I decided to call my mother. The phone constantly rang but she did not pick. This gave me a little tension, and i called my uncle who was at work. He immediately picked me from home and we went to the market where they went shopping. After enquiring at few places we got to know that they had met with an accident and were taken to a nearby hospital. This news gave me goose bumps and I completely lost all control on myself. My uncle started calling all Hospitals in Bathinda frantically until we found out where they were.
After 3 hours of search, we finally found them at Max Hospital. My mother was hurt badly and was admitted, my aunt had some bruises but was immediately discharged. The doctors at the hospital explained my mother’s situation and insured that she was not in danger and will be fully recovered in a week. This gave me some strength and I could finally relax. With the grace of god & the extraordinary care the staff & doctors at Max Hospital, Bathinda showed, my mother recovered in a couple of days. I now believe that it is not necessary that one can get good treatment only in a big city. The whole holistic approach of the hospital towards the patient is what matters, whether in a big city or a small one.

How to find the right cancer hospital for right cancer treatment?

Cancer is a disease that poses severe threat to human lives since many ages. For an individual, just the name of cancer is enough to frighten him or her. Now just think of the person who has cancer and the person who is at the last stage of this disease and just counting his days in this world. This is disease that cannot be treated in one day, one week or one month, in fact, it’s a disease that demands enormous patience and determination from the patient.
Many studies suggest that due to the rising complexities of life, more and more people are getting susceptible to cancer. Not only humans but plants can also get cancer. Even dinosaurs suffered from it. The disease has been around for thousands and thousands of years. Around 5 years back, my uncle was passed way due to pancreas cancer.
He was diagnosed with cancer around 3-4 years before his demise. He moved from one cancer hospital to another, all of them claiming to provide the best cancer treatment. Based on his case, I determined that the success or failure of any cancer treatment depends on the location of the cancer and its stage. Many people ignore the preliminary symptoms of cancer and when they pay heed to it, it develops to an advanced stage.
In my opinion, one should get himself scrutinized every year so as to detect anything unusual. Make this a regular habit in order to become proactive in finding any disease. If one diagnosed positive with cancer, next thing to do is to locate a leading cancer hospital in the city, state or even country. As it is about your life, one should take no chance when it comes to find the right cancer treatment.
Over the past few years, there has been numerous cancer hospitals opened in the country and the level of cancer treatment has risen up to great extent. Today not only Indians but people from foreign countries come to India to get exemplary cancer treatment at affordable costs. As cancer treatment is a long-term process, cost constitutes an important factor in finding the right hospital. Always remember that your own level of understanding regarding the disease is very much beneficial in choosing the right hospital and treatment. In today’s time of internet, finding reliable information is not a big deal as there are lots of websites available offering great levels of information related to almost anything.

I Gave Up Smoking to Get Relief from Cancer

Life is never the same. There are many ups and downs that one has to go through. It helps us to rejoice our happiness, help us to overcome our setback and go through several paths to know-how the great experience called- Life. Life is meant to be cherished and keeping the routine in balance.
Balance in your work as well as balance in your diet. And the most important above all – not being habituated to bad habits. They spoil your life, so bad. At the present moment, you won’t realize that you are spoiling it but when the situation will start worsening you will come across that fateful day. That day you will realize- it’s too late now, to act over it. When there was time to act, you enjoyed deteriorating the condition and now you are dealing with the difficult situation.
But it’s never too late to stop those bad habits that are worsening the situation more. Today, I work as a social activist and help people overcome their fear and difficulties. Especially, whenever I notice people smoking cigarettes, I put forward my helping hand to them. As, I myself went through this bad experience, I know that how it feels. I was luckier that I got treatment in time and realized that it was never too late.
Smoking is really an addiction. Nicotine is a drug that is certainly present in the tobacco plant and is mainly responsible for a person’s dependence to tobacco products, including cigarettes. During smoking, nicotine enters the lungs and is engrossed quickly into the bloodstream and travels to the brain in a matter of seconds. It causes addiction to cigarettes and other tobacco products that is parallel to the addiction produced by using drugs such as heroin and cocaine.
This drug caused lung cancer. I used to enjoy a lot but that unfortunate day when I came to know that I was having lung cancer, I was moved by the fact. But, it was truth that I had to face. Then the search began for best Hospitals in Mohali. We looked up several health institutions but were not convinced with the service they were providing us.
Then, Max-best Cancer Hospital in Mohali Punjab topped the list, which we were convinced with. The treatment that they provided in my case was the best. They helped me to live again. And from that day onwards, I promised myself, not to smoke again in my life.

Sweetness Can Cause Prolonged Pain

“Don’t overdo it!” This should be our motto in life as far as consumption of sweet treats is concerned. In today’s day and age, when people are racing against time and are picking up food items to munch on while on the run, very few are actually holding themselves back and controlling their intake of sugar. And this is where people are committing a big blunder. Rising sugar levels is definitely a thing to take care of, and when left unchecked, it can lead to diabetes.

Simply put, when there’s too much of sugar in your blood, the pancreas (the gland below the stomach) stops producing enough insulin (which is a hormone). Considering that the body needs glucose for energy, and that the lack of insulin makes it difficult for the cells of the body to absorb glucose, both of these factors lead to an incurable condition called Diabetes Mellitus, commonly known as only Diabetes.

Studies suggest that mostly people are unaware of the fact that they are suffering from diabetes, and its prolonged condition without any medical treatment can lead to dire health complications - for instance, excessive glucose in the blood can damage the blood vessels, furthermore leading to nerve damage, eye damage or blindness, heart disease, kidney failure or stroke, even! Hence, it’s best to keep a lookout for these symptoms and see if you’re suffering from any of these:
1.)    High blood pressure
2.)    Weight loss
3.)    Frequent urination
4.)    Blurred vision
5.)    Slow healing sores
6.)    Tiredness
7.)    Numbness of feet
8.)    Increase in appetite

Make sure that you’re not facing any of the above mentioned symptoms. In case you are, it’s best to get checked for diabetes as soon as possible. In fact, Max Super Speciality Hospital in Mohali has organized a Free Diabetes Check Camp. Starting from the 9th of September 2013 up till the 14th of September, 2013, there would be free consultations with Endocrinologists and Dieticians, apart from the free Diabetes check-up.

So for all those who are staying in and near Mohali, we suggest that you come down to the camp to take the first step towards awareness and prevention. This camp would also prove extremely fruitful to those individuals or those families who have a history of the ‘diabetic condition’. Make sure that diabetes isn’t running in your blood or your genes, for that matter!

Beat Cancer The Nutritious Way

Eating well is half the battle won, when fighting against cancer. Especially when you’re diagnosed with a disease wherein the side effects of the treatment could lead to a loss of appetite, making it a challenge for you to like what you’re eating. Therefore, eating and experimenting with dishes that will help you keep your weight intact and stay strong is a good idea.

It is noted that during the ongoing treatment of cancer, patients report of not being able to taste food as they are and often complain of a sore throat and mouth. Keeping this in mind, since citrus and tangy fruits and veggies could hurt, it’s best to drink sweet fruit juices. Peach juice, sweet cherry juice, watermelon juice, mango nectar and pear nectar are some healthy picks which are also good in calorie content. The intake of these will help those who often feel dehydrated after the chemo therapy.
Besides fruit juices, one can also explore the possibility of eating different types of soups – like chicken soup, garlic and almond soup, green-leafy vegetables soup and so on. The idea is not to restrict, but to diversify your diet which must incorporate foods and substances that are high on protein, iron, and vitamins like A, D and E.

Milk shakes and fruit smoothies are also a rich source of important vitamins and minerals; of course calcium is the key-takeaway of healthy-goodness here. But when we talk of fruit-yogurt smoothies, let’s not forget the amazing benefits it has to offer – besides being high on protein and calcium, yogurt also contains probiotics.  Add to that a fitting fruit, say for instance a banana, and that’s a recipe that will keep cancer patients high on energy levels. Maintaining stamina and strengthening the immune system are two important bodily requirements of those suffering from cancer. And drinks like banana-yogurt smoothie and strawberry milkshake do the needful.

There could be days when eating a full meal could seem like a task. Cancer treatment with its mixture of therapies and medicines could do this to you. In days like these, when eating isn’t on your agenda, go in for snacks like cheese omelette and banana fritters with dips. Even better, you could try eating a bowl full of cold salad when hot meals make you feel nauseated. And don’t just limit to one type of salad, but go for salads that comprise of different veggies that give you energy and are high on protein.

Keeping the nutritional aspect in mind for cancer patients, Max Healthcare has come out with a recipe book called ‘Beat Right’, dedicated specially for those recovering from cancer. Now here’s a book that gives you an insight on how appetizing and interesting your diet can be, apart from being nutritionally sound. Check out a snapshot of it here: & to order the same, click here:

So make sure you grab your copy of Beat Right soon enough and beat the food-blues by trying the recipes mentioned. It’s time to beat cancer the nutritious way!

Break Your Fast With Breakfast

Here’s a food-rule to live by – ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.’ The sooner you start applying this golden rule into your lives, the sooner you will realize the n number of health benefits attached to the habit of eating breakfast ‘kingsize’. Even before we begin to consider as to why breakfast is the most important meal of the day, let us look at a fact which is often ignored – when we’re asleep, believe it or not, the body continues to function and by the time you get up in the morning, your body needs fuel to kickstart the day.

After completing 8 to 9 hours of sleep, some of you might feel refreshed and energized, but this feeling of rejuvenation shouldn’t be confused with a flow of energy that will remain throughout the day, on its own. This flow of energy cannot sustain itself for long and hence, it is extremely essential that you back it up with a good meal of breakfast.

Breakfast, the term, comes from combining two words - ‘break’ and ‘fast’. The time span spent sleeping is more or less fasting since you stay without consuming water or eating food for a continuous stretch of 8 to 9 hours. And when you wake up, your stomach’s empty – one reason why many get up in the morning feeling dehydrated. If this has happened to you, make sure to drink up at least 2 glasses of water as soon as you wake up. Doing this, you ‘break’ your ‘fast’, therefore the name – ‘breakfast’.

The general tendency these days is to grab whatever is available, but the right approach should be to eat a mix of food components that give you energy to drive your physical and mental ability to the maximum potential. And the food you pick to eat for breakfast will be the deciding factor of how far you can push your energy levels. To jumpstart your day with strength and vitality, try having:
·         A bowl of whole-grain breakfast cereal with skimmed milk or soy milk.
·         Freshly cut fruits. Or you could even add fruits to a glass of milk in a mixie & turn it into a healthy smoothie (let go of table sugar if you’re health conscious).
·         A healthy sandwich of freshly cut veggies like lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber.
·         Boiled / poached eggs with brown or multi-grain toasts.
·         Oatmeal with skimmed milk and dry-fruits.
·         Freshly made juices. You could mix tangy veggies and citrus fruits together for a fun energizing drink.
·         Coffee and tea to wake you up from the leftover slumber-ness.
With so many exciting choices, why would you want to say no to this early morning treat? Refrain from skipping breakfast, as studies suggest that those who regularly skip breakfast are at a higher risk of suffering from obesity, heart diseases, high cholesterol and type-2 diabetes.

Motivation At Max’s Obesity Support Group

How often have you given up on the thought of losing weight? Have you lost the count? Well, you’re not alone. Making weight loss an ultimate goal will mean that there will be hurdles in the way till you achieve it, but it’s far more important to view weight loss as a journey - a journey that one should undertake for the sake of being fit and for the love of being healthy.

Despite the crazy frenzy surrounding ‘immediate’ and ‘fast’ weight loss, it’s imperative to understand that there are no shortcuts to losing those extra kilos. Sad but true, if you’re trying to lose weight quickly, keep in mind, that whatever crash dieting or over-exerting exercises you take on, the results would be unsatisfactory in the long run. For one, you will put back all of those extra kilos that you lost (you could end up piling on more) once you stop dieting. Second, over-exerting will result in fatigue or you could end up hurting your body.

Respect your body and build up your physical stamina over a period of time by joining a gym where you have a gym expert or a fitness trainer to guide you in the right direction. And as far as crash dieting is concerned, it will do exactly what the name suggests – it will result in a body crash-down.
Refrain from making decisions out of frustration; because once frustration gets the best of you, it’s easy to fall off the weight-loss track. Be gentle on yourselves. Weight loss is not a war against your body, but in fact, is an art where you’re slowly and gently moulding the shape of your body. Also, don’t be too hard on yourselves when you give in to temptation. You’re only human, and it’s alright to eat something that might be a bucket full of calories if you’ve been craving for it, provided this is once in a blue moon and not a regular practice.

Then there are those days when you feel like skipping exercise just because you don’t feel like. You could be mentally stuck more than being physically tired. And the solution to your mental makeover is motivation. This is where Max Enlighten’s Obesity Support Group comes in!

Imagine meeting like-minded people who’ve struggled or are still struggling through the same issues as you are. Let their stories prove to be an inspiration for you, let their past experiences and mistakes prove to be a learning ground for you. And when you feel like giving up, let this support group be your pillar of strength and help you fight all the odds concerning weight loss. So make sure you register for the Obesity Support Group Meet on 21st September, 2013 at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.

Come over to meet experts talk and hear their take on why you shouldn’t be losing out on life because of obesity. ‘Enlighten’ yourselves by partaking in this health-support activity. For more info on the event and Enlighten’s Obesity Support Group, click here: http://bit.ly/1e5TotA

For Healthy Senior Citizens

Don’t worry about the age, for age is just a number.

They say you’re as old as you think you are. While this phrase may stand true for most of you, one can’t run from the fact of life that as we age, our health slowly and steadily deteriorates. In other words, one can’t hide away from the cycle of life – we’re delicate when we’re born, we grow up to be strong, and slowly, in time, we complete the life cycle by becoming physically delicate, yet again.

Old age is the time when senior citizens get to live a life, free from any tensions, and that which is usually spent relaxing. However, old age also calls for extra care and when speaking from the physical standpoint, it becomes more and more important to go for regular health check-ups to avoid the unnecessary stretching of any diseases.

Some of the common health issues faced by the elderly are obesity and failure of keeping weight under control, falling and imbalance, urinary incontinence, dementia, and arthritis. Some of the health issues mentioned usually crop up much later in life due to negligence of health during the time when the body is young and has a much stronger immunity to diseases.

For instance, neglecting a healthy diet during your 20s, 30s, and even 40s can start showing when you’re nearing the age of 50. Living on junk food perpetually, and keeping away from exercise can have a ripple effect on your health. Of course, obesity is just one part of the takeaway, negligence shown towards a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle can pave way for a large number of diseases which you may accumulate over a period of time. After all, when you let go of your diet, you not only put on kilos, but those kilos and that dangerous fat stored in your body can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and high levels of cholesterol. These are just few of the implications of leaving your diet-chart unattended.

Similarly, when we talk of urinary incontinence, it is necessary to know that even though aging is one of the major causes of the weak capacity of the bladder to hold urine, continuous and over-consumption of alcohol and addiction to smoking can also play a role in the weakening of the bladder and overflowing of urine.
Having stated the above, it’s only vital to adopt a healthy lifestyle, right from the start to live a disease-free old-age life. And club that with regular check-ups, there shouldn’t be any reason as to why you can’t live your remaining life tension-free. For the same, MaxHealthcare has introduced ‘Citizen Plus’ Card – a membership dedicated for senior citizens. You can get exciting offers on health packages once you have the card with you. So why not register for the same? To enroll, click here: http://bit.ly/1eMMrOn

Come to Max Patparganj & Keep Your Heart Healthy

A heart isn’t called a heart for any other reason, but because it is the core and soul of your physical dwelling, pumping oxygen-rich blood to the blood vessels, and these blood vessels carry life to all parts of the body. Imagine a car being driven to a destination, and the driver of the car giving up on driving, midway. Won’t the car halt and cease to complete the journey? Similarly, without the presence of this hollow, muscular organ called heart – our body would cease to function.

Now while the heart does pump blood into the blood vessels, there is a good amount of oxygen-rich blood that is required by the heart itself. And coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle, making it possible for the heart to function well. Here, one should note, that when these coronary arteries are clogged or blocked, it becomes a tough task for the blood to reach the heart muscle. This condition of blockage of coronary arteries leads to heart attacks, which can be a cause of death.  In other words, coronary heart disease (CHD) is a disease that can lead to severe complications of the healthy-functioning of the heart.
It’s but natural to strive to keep your heart healthy. However, it’ll be shocking to note, that most people don’t realize at the time of a heart attack that they are having a heart attack. This type of a heart attack isn’t uncommon and is better known as a ‘silent’ heart attack. This brings us to the point that not all heart attacks begin with a piercing pain in the chest. In fact, as per the findings of a research, some of the patients who’ve had a heart attack suffered from very little or no chest pain at all. But of course, this isn’t necessarily the case for all patients. Occurrence of the symptoms really depends on person to person. Still, it’s best to know the common symptoms of a heart attack.

If you’re running short of breath or are left breathless, and this feeling of breathlessness is accompanied by discomfort or crushing pain in the left or the center side of the chest, it’s best to hit the alarm button! This chest pain could feel like pressure being applied on the chest, and could also feel like heartburn. Apart from the chest pain, there is a strong possibility that you could also feel discomfort or pain in one arm or both the arms, a feeling of uneasiness on the upper part of the stomach, or your neck or jaw could begin to ache.
At any given point in time, if you think that these above mentioned symptoms could be taking over, and if you believe that there is a slightest of possibility that it could be a heart attack, then ring on the emergency number or call out to people and ask them to rush you to a nearest hospital or ask for an ambulance to come over. Don’t hesitate, for every second counts when under a heart attack.

While staying aware about the symptoms of a heart attack is vital, it’s even better to go for regular check-ups to keep a tab on the state of your heart. Keeping this in mind, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj brings to you special offers. Make sure you walk in at Max Patparganj for a complete Heart Check-up! Don’t Fall Sick This Monsoon Season

Most of the time, in India at least, rain is associated with eating of hot jalebis and samosas with masala chai. While this holds true in the positive aspect, the flip side of the monsoons isn’t so rosy. The rainy season brings with itself not only traffic jams, but also waterborne diseases. No matter how well the infrastructure might be, there is always the panic of drainage water getting mixed with rain water. Add to that water clogging along with water stagnation, and you’ve got yourselves a recipe for disaster. Plus, with mosquito-breeding happening in and around where there’s stagnant water, it’s obvious that those grounds are the point of contagious diseases which are communicable.

It’s best to save yourselves from these diseases by adopting proper preventive measures. For instance, washing hands with an anti-bacterial soap, every time you’re about to eat food (especially with your hands) is a tip one should religiously follow. At times, when washing is impossible, using a hand sanitizer is the next best option. Also, when travelling via the public transport, avoid touching handles, seats with bare hands. Keep tissue paper handy and semi-wrap it in the palm of your hands. One should also avoid touching their sensitive areas like the face, or rubbing your eyes as it can cause infection.

Apart from the above mentioned precautions, the most important preventive measure is to keep a tab on your food and liquid intake. One of the common diseases during the monsoons is diarrhea. And considering that India is famous for its street food like gol-gappas, chat, vada-pau and what not, it’s best to stay away from street-food during the monsoons, if you want to keep diarrhea at bay! Because diarrhea happens due to contaminated water, the best way to avert the disease is to drink boiled or purified water and refrain from drinking tap water.

At any given point, if you notice that you are suffering from the following symptoms, it’s best to visit a doctor soon enough:
·         If you’re running high on temperature, and if your fever is accompanied with abdominal pain that is unbearable.
·         If your stomach is loose – that is frequent and watery stools.
·         If you notice blood in your stool, apart from the fact that it is frequent and watery.
·         If there’s bloating and puffiness on your body.
·         If you’re feeling dizzy from dehydration.

This monsoon season, enjoy the rain to the fullest by not being sick. However, if you feel an inch of uneasiness, don’t waste time and visit a Max Healthcare Hospital for a check-up. To book a webpointment, click here now: http://bit.ly/1dMkLYw

Strong Bones For A Healthy Life

Were you aware that a human being, on an average, has about 206 bones in his / her body? Now that is a big number, isn’t it? And all of these bones, when aligned in a particular fashion, make up the human skeleton, giving our body the much required shape and design. This shape and bone design enables us to sit and stand in particular postures. Also, try imagining a human body without any bones. Won’t it be just an irregular shaped mass of flesh? Yes, you’ve got that right. This visual should now settle the fact that bones are much required in a human body.

While it’s vital to keep your calcium intake adequate, at times, that alone isn’t enough. A diet which is rich in calcium and minerals, along with enough exposure to Vitamin D (or intake of Vitamin D supplements) is the key to a healthy set on bones. The term ‘osteoporosis’ in itself, in Greek, implies ‘porous bones’. Thus reflecting that osteoporosis is a disease of bones wherein the mass and density of the bones is poor.

However, one can prevent from being diagnosed with osteoporosis if the following points are taken care of:
·         Make sure your intake of calcium is enough to keep your bones strong. Drink at least a glass of milk. And if drinking milk is too much of a hassle, make sure dairy products are checked in regularly in your fridge. Dig in a bowl of curd, twice daily. Add fresh fruits to it and get experimental.
·         Your intake of Vitamin D can be sourced from fish, soy products, eggs, and mushrooms. That apart, you can even take Vitamin D supplements like cod liver oil capsules (these should be taken after consulting a doctor first). And of course, exposure to sunlight is the easiest way to absorb Vitamin D.
·         Cut down on your consumption of alcohol and products which have high amounts of caffeine.
·         Give up on smoking. Smoking isn’t worth it when it comes to the price you have to pay for suffering from osteoporosis.
·         Stay active. Don’t let this sedentary lifestyle get the best of you. Simply get up and get going!

It’s important to note that when osteoporosis is left unchecked, weak bones can result in a fracture or multiple fractures. The breaking of bones can take a great deal of time to heal, depending upon the severity of the case. At times, surgery is required to treat a severe case of bone fracture. Hence, it’s best to avert any such damage and acknowledge any signs that could mean that you’re suffering from the disease.

Some of the easily noticeable symptoms of osteoporosis are joint pains, difficulty in standing up or sitting up straight, backache, and a fracture of the spine, hip or the wrist. If these are similar to what you’ve faced or are currently facing, then it’s time to go in for a check-up. Walk in at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, and get a special Bone Health Package! All you need to know about Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty is a nose reshaping surgery done to alter, change, and correct the angle, shape and position of the nose to ensure that the nose is better proportioned as compared to the rest of the face.

People undergo Rhinoplasty for two reasons, the first being aesthetic and the second being medical. Some people go through the surgery to ensure that they get the perfect looking nose which further enhances their appearance in totality. Other people go through the surgery to deal with medical conditions like chronic congestion and other breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty involves incisions to ensure access to the bones and the cartilage supporting the nose. The incisions are made inside the patient’s nose to make sure that they are not visible after the surgery. It may happen that the surgeon may remove a bone or a cartilage or add a tissue taken from other body part. Synthetic fillers are also used sometimes. Post the surgery, the surgeon drapes the rearranged and reshaped bone and cartilage over the nose’s structure. A splint to support the new nose shape is placed to ensure that the structure gets firm and the nose heals. Sometimes nasal packing is also done to provide proper support to the restructured nose.

Post the surgery, all the packing would be removed within a couple of days but the patient would have to wait for a week to get the splint and other bandaging removed. Post the surgery, the face or the area around the eyes and the nose may feel a little puffed up and bruised for a few days. To ease this condition, the doctor may advise the patient to use cold compresses or intake some medicine for pain. It would take 10-14 days for the whole area to heal and for the bruises and swelling to subside. The patient would be asked to keep the head elevated and still for the first few days as a precaution and post-surgery care. Strenuous activities also need to be avoided post-surgery for a few days.

It must be kept in mind that the results of this surgery are permanent. Rhinoplasty must be performed on a fully developed nose, preferably after the age of 18. The risks involved in this surgery include temporary swelling and bruising. Other problems that may occur include bleeding, injury or holes in the septum, skin problems such as tissue rupture or irritation, infection, nasal blockage, complication owing to anesthesia. It really helps if the patient has realistic expectations pertaining to the surgery.

The Righteous Way to Loose Weight

What is that one thing that bothers you most about your weight? The fact that you can’t lose it quickly or that it keeps coming back in a span of one or two months? Maintaining your weight is the most challenging task and requires great dedication, planning and a lot of hard work. Nothing comes easy, except of course the weight you put on. Getting rid of that weight is something you are always struggling with.

Creating the right balance between eating and burning the excess weight off is the key to a healthy weight loss. Crash diets might lead to easy weight loss but a healthier long term goal should include healthy food habits and proper exercising for at least 6 days a week. Reducing the calorie amount and increasing healthier food items in your daily diet, are vital components to a slow yet safe way of weight loss. Try and avoid any kind of sudden diet change as they will surely help you lose the first 3-4 kilos, but after a point your weight loss will get stagnant.

Childhood is the right time to imbibe good eating habits in your children as this is the stage where they are trying to understand their food habits, tastes and preferences. They do not know what is healthy and what is not, until and unless you teach them that. Learning starts at home! Encourage them to walk back from the bus stop till the house, instead of picking up them in the car. Instill the habit of having at least one fruit in a day so that they continue that even when they grow up and always keep a check on their intake of junk food. Of course occasional 'letting go ' is very important for a holistic weight loss approach.

In some cases, dieting and exercising also does not seem to work that much and those patients go for Obesity Treatment, which is available at leading hospitals and clinics across the country. Weight loss surgery is the only solution left to avoid serious threats to the body in terms of diseases. Obesity treatment limits the amount of food one can eat and decreases the absorption of food as well as calories. Of course this does not mean that you do not have to prevent weight regain after the treatment. Just keep track of what you eat and stay in shape by exercising every day. Always consult your doctor and be motivated!

You may always have to remain vigilant about your weight. Combining a healthier diet and more activity is the best way to lose weight and keep it off for the long term. If you take weight-loss medications, you'll probably regain weight when you stop taking them. You might even regain weight after weight-loss surgery if you continue to overeat or eat foods laden with fat and calories.

Dental Implants – Regain that confidence with your smile

Do your smile with confidence? Are you happy with the overall appearance of your teeth? Do you have any missing teeth, chipped teeth, or large gaps between your teeth? If these are the question you have in your mind and you’re looking for an answer, I would say one solution – Dental Implants.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is typically a prosthetic replacement for a missed tooth. As natural tooth consists of the crown and the root, this kind of implant makes the use of advance material and technology to let you smile with confidence. The crown is the visible part of teeth which remains covered with white enamel. The tooth root supports the crown which extends into the jawbone. The root is the part of the tooth that is effectively replaced by an implant.

There are mainly three parts of any dental implant –implant device itself (which is inserted directly into the bone); the abutment - the piece that connects the implant device to the third part - the overlying crown or denture.

What is the procedure for dental implants?

Basis your specific condition and the type of implant chosen, your periodontics will chalk out a treatment plan customized to meet your needs.

  • Replacing a single tooth – if you miss a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it
  • Replacing multiple teeth – In case you’re missing several teeth, implant-supported bridges can replace them
  • Replacing all of teeth - If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant-supported full bridge or full denture can replace them all
  • Sinus Augmentation – The quantity and quality of the bone where the implant is to be placed plays a major role in ensuring success of the implant. The upper back jaw has typically been one of the most crucial areas to successfully place dental implants due to insufficient bone quantity and quality and the close proximity to the sinus. In such cases, Sinus augmentation can help rectify this problem by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the placement of dental implants.
  • Ridge Modification – To correct the problem of inadequate bone in the upper of lower jaw, the gum is raised away from the ridge to expose the bone defect. This process is called Ridge Modification.

What are the outcomes?

Always remember your teeth need regular doctor checkups and monitoring after dental implants. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaque-free, brushing and flossing is absolutely necessary.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Your doctor may recommend you a Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) in several conditions. In a minimally invasive surgery, a surgeon makes one or more incisions – each about half an inch long – rather than making a large cut. The incision (s) lets the surgeons insert a tube (s) inside the skin; with the help of this tube (s), a surgeon inserts tiny cameras and specially designed surgical instruments inside the patient’s body. Once the surgery is done, these instruments are taken back.

Over the years, minimally invasive procedures have become quite popular. Reasons for this popularity include less blood loss, less post-operative pain, less noticeable scars, and faster recovery. However, this surgical procedure is not for all. Whether you qualify for minimally invasive surgery depends on various factors like your condition, general health status, and medical history. So it’s ultimately your doctor who decides whether minimally invasive surgery is for you.

Bariatric surgeries, or weight loss surgeries, are among the surgeries that are performed laparoscopically (minimally invasive surgeries are also called laparoscopic surgeries). Lap band, sleeve, and gastric bypass, all these weight loss surgeries can be performed laparoscopically so as to pass on maximum benefits to the patient. However, in some cases, your doctor may opt for the traditional long cut surgery.
To understand the implications of a minimally invasive procedure, let’s take a look at its lists of advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages –

  •  Less trauma to the patient
  •  Less pain
  •  Smaller skin scars
  • Faster recovery
  • Less blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Fast becoming a preferred technique for performing major operations such as cardiac surgery and bariatric surgery

Disadvantages –

  •  Specialist training needed for carrying out minimally invasive procedure
  •  Specially designed equipment needed
  •  Some procedure, especially the latest ones, may take longer
  •  Not suitable for all types of surgeries

It’s quite clear that the procedure has both advantages as well as disadvantages; however, benefits far outweigh the disadvantages, and that’s why doctors around the world are adopting minimally invasive in all possible surgeries.

Takeaway – Minimally Invasive Surgery is incredibly beneficial. Talk to your doctor if you have been recommended a surgery. See whether you qualify for a minimally invasive one.

Bone Marrow Transplant – The Complete Story

What it is – Bone marrow transplant (BMT) refers to the procedure whereby diseased bone marrow in the body is replaced by healthy bone marrow. Bone marrow is found in some of our bones; it’s spongy, and the birthplace of stem cells. These cells grow on to become red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Why it is needed –
Bone marrow transplant is often needed when your own bone marrow has been damaged and is not able to produce normal blood cells. Transplant becomes essential if:

  •  You do not enough of red blood cells in your body. Without the transplant, you’ll be starved of oxygen. You will feel tired easily; and your organs may get damaged.
  •  You do not have sufficient amount of white blood cells. In this case, infection becomes a major concern. You can get infected very easily.
  •  You do not have a proper reservoir of platelet. You will bleed and bruise more easily.

Here is a list of some conditions, where you need bone marrow transplant as a treatment:

  •   Bone marrow failure -
  •   Leukemia -
  •   Genetic blood disorders –

Bone marrow transplant can be autologous (wherein bone marrow is taken from your own body), allogeneic (wherein bone marrow is taken from a donor’s body) and syngeneic (from an identical twin’s body).

Is it for all –
No. your doctor will put you through several tests - such as physical examinations, blood tests, biopsy of small pieces of your bone marrow, imaging tests, etc., - to determine whether bone marrow is safe and beneficial for you. If you are found fit for the transplant, you are prepared for the transplant.

After Transplant –
Bone marrow transplant is a life-saving procedure. Post-transplant, infection is a major concern. And that’s why your family and friends may have to wear masks and gloves when talking to you. If you have school going kids, they may be asked to wash their hands, and change their clothes before they mess up with you! Slowly, but surely, you’ll get back to a normal lifestyle.

Your Hairs are precious….

Whether you’re a super model or an ordinary individual, there is one thing in common i.e., hair loss problem. I have heard so many times from various people complaining about their hair loss. All of them told that despite doing many things they are satisfied with the outcomes. So what’s the ultimate solution to get back your precious hairs? I would suggest undergoing hair restoration surgery. The concept is no longer new to India as there are many hair transplant centers running in India.

A range of latest advances, including the use of needle concept in fue and the use of facial hair as an additional donor have been widely used by doctors all across the world. The best thing about hair restoration surgery is that once the transplanted hair begins to grow, it will continue to do so for a lifetime. The transplanted hair typically sheds within the first 2-6 weeks after the procedure as the roots enter a resting phase. Between 3-8 months, the transplanted roots start sprouting hair. It usually takes 10-12 months to see the full improvement in terms of density, as the hair continues to mature and thicken. It is also true that using hair strengthening products like Keratene, generally 2 to 3 weeks before transplant and from one week post-transplant can speed up the growth re-growth of the transplanted hair, while at the same time help reduce further hair loss. During the surgery, hair is taken from the back and sides of the scalp and implanted to the areas where has thinned. Natural looking results are obtained by transferring the hairs as very small “micro” or “mini” grafts.

Over the past few years, there have been numerous advanced took place in the hair loss surgery and hair restoration surgery in India or hair transplant surgery is comparatively lesser painful now than it in earlier times when larger sections of scalp were excised. Older methods of scalp reduction, flap transfer have mostly been replaced by ultra-refined follicular unit hair transplants.

Considering the high success rate of hair restoration surgery in India, more and more people are now inclining towards this revolutionary surgery and getting outcomes that are positive and permanent.

You Need To Sleep, Now

Sleep is the most commonly ignored aspect of working professionals in today’s day and age. And why shouldn’t it be? Important assignments, chasing deadlines, late night meetings, tight schedule, hectic work, meeting difficult targets and the list can go on and on. While we chase success and power mercilessly, we often put ‘sleeping’ on the back burner.
Sleeping is a way of renewing yourself daily. Re-energizing and replenishing your body and mind by this process of resting called sleeping is too vital a requirement. And if you don’t do what your body needs, then watch your body break down.
Before it’s too late, get into the habit of completing at least 6-7 hours of your ‘sleep’ time. You’ll be surprised at how healthy and happy you’ll feel when you wake up the morning after a night of good and sound sleep. And no, cat naps or short naps cannot be a substitute for sleep. But if you’re one of those who find trouble getting themselves to doze off, you could probably be suffering from insomnia. Derived from the Latin word, in meaning not and somnus meaning sleep, insomnia literally means ‘not sleeping’.
Although, some of the ways that you can get yourself to sleep, are: • Listening to ‘relaxation’ music. Chinese Bamboo Flute music is one good option, but you could really listen to anything that has a calming effect on you. • Read a book. • Avoid drinking coffee before sleeping. You could drink a cup of warm milk instead. • Avoid intake of caffeinated products and junk food altogether for dinner. Eat something light and healthy for a sound sleep.
Follow these and improve on your sleep hygiene. After all, sleeping well has a plethora of health benefits attached to it. For instance, a good night’s sleep will: • Help you improve your memory. • Reduce the risk of heart attacks and diabetes. • Help reduce weight. • Help you build stamina. • Make you live longer. • Curb premature aging. • Help deal with depression better.
With so many positives of sleeping well, why would you not want to sleep? Grab a soft pillow, switch off the lights, put on some relaxing music and try to clear your mind of any and every thought. Put yourself to sleep tonight and embrace a new and healthy you, starting tomorrow morning.
However, in cases of serious and chronic insomnia, it’s best to visit a Doctor. If prolonged sleeplessness occurs, acknowledge the problem and seek help at Max Healthcare, today.

Gastric bypass surgery and you

About Gastric Bypass Surgery:

GASTRIC BYPASS surgery is a weight loss surgery, and does two things: 1. it reduces your stomach’s size, 2. it creates a bypass so that your digestive system absorbs less nutrients.
Most of the bariatric surgeries are now done laparoscopically rather than using the traditional, long cuts. Laparoscope is a tiny, tubular instrument with a camera attached. The camera at the tip of laparoscope helps surgeons see and operate on your stomach.

How is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?
First things first, surgeons operate on your stomach, and drastically reduce its size. This surgery creates a new stomach, which is much smaller than the original one.
Second, they cut the small intestine, and sew parts of it directly onto the pouch (your surgically created stomach).
Whatever you eat and drink post-procedure goes into the pouch (newly created stomach) and then into the small intestine, bypassing a large part of your stomach and the first section of the small intestine. So, this way, you eat less and you absorb less. This is gastric bypass surgery.
Weight loss surgeries, like gastric bypass can provide long-term weight loss. The amount of weight you lose depends on many factors, including your type of surgery and your lifestyle habits post-surgery.
In addition to weight loss, gastric bypass surgery may improve or resolve conditions often related to being overweight, including:
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Severe sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes
A weight loss surgery can also improve your ability to perform the daily activities of your life, which could help improve your quality of life.

There is more to familial cancer than Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy. Take a deep breath and read on

If you have no idea about familial cancer, it is cancer that one is likely to inherit from one’s family. So, if one has a strong family history of cancer, the person is likely to get affected. Angelina Jolie too were worried about this inhering-cancer-from-family thing, and got herself tested.
Turned out, she was at a very high risk of developing breast as well as ovarian cancer (Ovarian cancer is a cancerous growth arising from the ovary. The ovary is an ovum-producing reproductive organ, often found in pairs as part of the vertebrate female reproductive system). Surgery was found to be the best thing that she could do to reduce her chances of developing cancer. So, she underwent double mastectomy, which refers to the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely; her chances of developing breast cancer have now dropped from 87% to under 5%.
In the New York Times op-ed where Jolie first spoke about her surgery, she talked about the “faulty” gene that can cause both breast and ovarian cancer. However, the genes are not to be blamed; in fact, these genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) help stop cancers from developing. As a matter of fact, everyone has two copies of BRCA1 and BRCA2; it’s only when one of the copies has some sort of fault and doesn’t work, the person faces a high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
Is there anything for you here?
If you’re worried about the risk of developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer because of a family history of cancer, you should immediately discuss this with your doctor. He/she may refer you to a Familial Cancer Centre. Services that a Familial Cancer Centre offers typically include testing, medical advice, counseling, and support.
The specialists will go through your family history; based on the tests, you'll be given an estimate of your inherited risk of cancer. Follow-up and options for early detection and prevention will be discussed.
Your first appointment may last for an hour. You may need to visit the centre more than once.
At, Max Healthcare we’ve state-of-the-art facilities and best of doctors for familial cancer. Book an appointment now!

6 Goals to Reach before You Undergo Gastric Bypass Surgery (Max Healthcare)

Gastric Bypass Surgery is very effective in inducing weight loss. It is both restrictive and mal-absorptive. It is restrictive in the sense that it restricts how much food the stomach can hold, and is mal-absorptive as it affects how much nutrients body absorbs. Surgery can be done laparoscopically (key-hole surgery) or through a larger open incision. Your doctor will decide which one is the best for you. However, more and more surgeons are using minimally invasive surgery these days. Remember, you’ll have to make some drastic changes to your lifestyle post procedure, and it’s better if you start inculcating some habits before surgery. So, here are 6 goals/habits that’ll help you make the most out of the Gastric Bypass Surgery.

1.Start Maintaining a Daily Food Record
Keep a watch on what goes inside, and write them down. This will give you an idea of how much calories you usually consume in a day.

2.Whole Grains, Vegetables, and Fruits
It’s time you start it! Include more and more of whole grains, vegetables, and fruits in your daily diet. Cut back on fast foods and other spicy foods.

3.It’s Time to Wean off of Sweets, Sodas, and Desserts
It’s not like you’ve to stop eating them; it’s like you’ve got to control how much you eat. Post-surgery, you’ll have to be very careful of eating sweets, sodas, desserts, and all sweetened beverages.

4.Protein is Your Best Friend
Introduce protein in your daily diet. Start eating protein rich foods at each meal. Also remember that high protein foods are the most important so have them before you consume any other food group (especially after the surgery).

5.Go Slow
Don’t drink liquids in one go; instead learn to sip them very slowly. Do this with your meals as well, which should ideally last for some 20 to 30 minutes. It’ll take you some days, but soon you’ll do it without any effort on your part.

6.Control Intake of Caffeinated and Carbonated Beverages
In order to get the most out of the gastric bypass surgery, you’ll have to learn to wean off of caffeinated and carbonated beverages; keep a watch on your consumption of alcoholic beverages as well.

Remember, surgery alone can’t do much for you; you’ll have to make the magic happen. Even after surgery, you’ll have to go for follow up sessions with your doctor and nutritionist so nothing comes in between you and your dream for a great body.

4 Secrets of Losing Weight QUICKLY

WEIGHT LOSS isn’t only for women; men are also looking for effective ways to lose weight. Go to any medical store, and you’ll see hundreds of products there – powder, pills, etc. - with muscular men and skinny women; all these products claim weight loss in 1 month, 2 month or at the most, 3 months. Many of us, having frustrated with continuously increasing weight, fall in the trap, and buy the pills or powders. So, what this imagination does to your weight loss plan? Well, it safeguards you against mindless eating. When you hold yourself for a minute, imagine eating the dessert lying before you, you somehow prepare yourself for the food, and eat sensibly.
