Donate your eyes

Eye Donation is a beautiful way to do some good for the humankind. Donate your eyes; take a pledge to be kind to those who do not have the power or ability to see, for those who are blinded unfortunately.

To donate eyes, you need to be above eighteen years of age. Anyone who is above eighteen years can donate eyes. Sex, blood group, region, religion are not determinant factors when some one decides to donate eyes. People who wear spectacles or people who have undergone surgery like cataract are also fit to donate eyes! Those who suffer from blindness because of any retinal and optic nerve disease can also pledge to donate eyes as long as their cornea is alright. Patients with hypertension, diabetes etc. are also good candidates to donate eyes.

In order to donate eyes of the deceased, the family members are just required to contact nearest Eye Bank as soon as possible (within 6 hours of the event of death). The family members are supposed to close the donor’s eyes and switch the fan off. The AC/Cooler needs to be running and wet cotton needs to be put onto the closed eyelids. The donor’s head needs to be kept raised using a pillow till the Eye Bank reaches the site of donation. The process of eye donation is done with the donor’s kin’s written consent along with two eye witnesses.

Gift someone a vision

Ability to see is one of the greatest gifts from God to mankind. Eyes and ability to see things are priceless. Humankind is, therefore, obliged to take care of the nature’s gift- eyes. Each one of us should take care of our eyes and appreciate our ability to see as not everyone is blessed with the ability to see. Donate your eyes. Do good for those who are not as blessed as you, for those who can not see the world around!

Eyedonation involves donating a person’s eyes after his/her death with proper consent of the person’s family! People who are unable to see because of the corneal disease really benefit from this process of eye donation. Cornea, the clear tissue and the focusing element of eyes drastically reduces or hampers vision totally, incase it becomes cloudy. This condition of cornea and vision is called corneal disease.
There are many factors resulting in corneal disease like eye infections, injuries, mal-nutrition during childhood & hereditary diseases. Through surgery, a damaged cornea can be replaced by a healthy (donor) cornea and blindness of the patient can be cured. The cornea is the only part that is transplanted through surgery and the remaining eye is used to carry on research and further education.

Come to Max Healthcare and donate your eyes to help someone see the world around. Donating the eyes is a great way to do your bit towards the humanity. Gift someone a vision for life. Help someone to fulfill his/her dreams by pledging your eyes for donation at Max Eye Care.

Important things to know about breast-feeding

Breastfeeding is one of the most satisfying experiences for any mother. Breast-fed babies have a higher IQ than others. Breast-feeding decreases possibility of diarrhea in babies greatly and helps in creating a special bond between mother and child.

At the 3rd and 4th day after the childbirth, the flow of breast milk increases. The mother may feel slight pain and heaviness in her breasts. This state is referred to as engorgement. Engorgement would last for a few initial days and in order to ease the pain, the mother sometimes has to manually and sometimes using a pump empty her breast.

New mothers often wonder if they are producing good amount of milk for their babies or not. The way to guage it is simple, that is, if a child sleeps for two to three hours after having the feed, it is indicative of the fact that the child is well-fed and the milk being produced is of optimum quantity. Also, if your child is wetting 6-8 nappies per day and is gaining 150 grams of weight per week from the tenth day onwards, the milk and feed that your child is getting is enough. If the baby’s stool changes from black to yellow in colour in the first five days of its birth; the amount of milk being produced is good enough.

Know your child’s condition and well-being, stay informed. Come to Max Institute of Paediatrics to know what’s best for your child. We wish you a happy parenthood!

Make sure you are doing the right thing for your baby

Taking your baby home for the first time? Make sure you are well aware. Remember, when it comes to your baby, even little things matter.

Be cautious about those nappy rashes that your child may develop. Do not ignore nappy rashes as they cause discomfort to your baby and may make it irritable and cranky. Nappy rashes occur due to high frequency of skin contact with stools and urine. Make sure that you use disposable nappy for your baby which is not only high quality but are also soft in texture to ensure baby’s comfort. Using simple Vaseline on your baby’s skin to prevent direct contact of skin to the nappy would help greatly to prevent rashes on your child’s skin. You can apply a zinc oxide based cream, incase, your child develops rashes. Use the nappy creams very liberally and frequently. Do not use talcum powder around the nappy area. If you notice that rash/es are not getting better, then, you must contact your doctor immediately.

Another thing that is extremely important is to massage your baby. One of the most common mistakes that new mothers make is massaging their baby everyday using mustard oil and home made ghee or curd. The reason behind this is the age old superstitions that surround childcare in India; indeed childcare is important, but it is not always beneficial to use non-tested and non-recommended methods of childcare that carry on the basis of nothing but belief. Avoid massaging your child everyday and do not use almond oil, mustard oil, ghee, curd etc.

Visit Max Institute of Paediatrics to know more about childcare. Trust only Max Institute of Paediatrics to ensure comprehensive, compassionate and affectionate childcare facilities and tips. Make sure you are doing the right thing for your baby!

Keep a tab on your newborn’s health

When you take your baby home for the first time, there are some of the things that you need to take care of.

Firstly, pay attention to breast-feeding. Make sure that the whole of your areola is in the baby’s mouth when it is feeding. If your baby sleeps for 2-3 hours after the feed then it indicates that your baby is well-fed and your milk is enough. However, if your baby wakes up, is suckling, is irritable after every half an hour, then your milk is not enough. Since cow’s milk is not recommendable in the first year of the child’s life, make sure that you consult your doctor to have a proper solution to the problem.

Keep a tab on the jaundice level of your baby. It is seen that about 50% of newborns suffer from jaundice. Make sure that you know about your child’s condition and that you do not miss any of the recommended OPD visits for your child.

Also, make sure that your baby’s stools do not contain any kind of mucus or blood in them. A healthy baby passes stools as many as 8-10 (or less) times per day. Make sure that your baby is doing well, if there is any kind of mucus or blood that you may suspect, immediately consult your paediatrician. Mucus or blood may be the result of stomach infection; newborns are prone to infections and therefore, they may catch stomach infection extremely easily!

MaxInstitute of Paediatrics is a unique gateway to childcare. It’s a super speciality, one stop facility that helps you through your childcare. You can rely on Max for a compassionate and dedicated care for your child.

Put a brave front and fight Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is found only in men. The cancer develops in the prostate gland which is a part of the male reproductive system and grows very slowly. Prostate gland is as small as the size of a walnut and is located near the rectum, below the bladder.

There are many types of cells in the prostate while prostate cancer stems and occurs in the gland cells. The gland cells produce the prostate fluid which further gets added to the semen. Cancer that develops in the gland cells is called Adenocarcinoma. Other rare types of cancers found in the gland cells include Small Cell Carcinomas, Transitional Cell Carcinomas and Sarcomas.
Prostate Specific-Antigen (blood test) and Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) are two ways to detect the presence of prostate cancer. Prostate Specific-Antigen is made by normal cells and cancer cells. PSA is found in semen as well as in the blood. The higher the level of the PSA, higher is the chance to catch prostate cancer. The PSA level may also increase as a result of enlargement of prostate (non-cancerous) in men as they get older (the condition is medically referred) , age and as a consequence to prostatitis which causes infection and inflammation in the prostate.
Incase of Digital Rectal Exam, the doctor inserts a well-lubricated finger in the prostate to detect any lumps or hardness in the prostate. Most of the cancers develop in back part of the prostate and can be detected during a DRE.
Neither the PSA nor the DRE screening is 100% accurate; however are primary methods to detect prostate cancer. Further screening and tests are required incase the results of either of the tests are abnormal. Therefore, it is important to stay informed and trust the specialized doctors at Max Cancer Centre. Keep yourself informed and put a brave front to cancer with the help of the expert team at Max Cancer Centre.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammoplasty. It involves removal of breast tissue and reshaping of skin to reduce the size of the breasts.

Breast reduction is done incase one suffers from back aches and neck pains. Incase one is unable to breathe properly and one has stasis ulcers, grooves in the shoulders due to the bra straps, numbness in any portion of the breasts and the chest area due to the excessive weight, breast reduction becomes a recommended option. Breast reduction also serves a purely aesthetic purpose for people who dislike their breast size and wish to have perfect looking breasts. Physical discomfort and psychological problems due to one’s appearance are the reasons that people go through breast reduction for.

Women who choose to undergo breast reduction should have realistic expectations from the surgery. Lactating mother or women intend to breast feed should not go for breast reduction. Women who have undiagnosed lumps or masses in breasts, are severely obese, irregular mammograms, are diabetic, have blood clotting disorders, and have wound healing disorders are not candidates fit enough to undergo breast reduction. Lactating mothers, smokers and women suffering from circulatory disorders are not at all good candidates.

Preparatory guidelines are given to the patients by the surgeon prior to the surgery. During the surgery, excess of glandular tissue and fat is removed. The nipple is moved to a new position, skin from the breast sides are brought down around the areola and a rounded contour of the breast is created.

Sometimes genetic factors and body behaviour may cause effects of aging in people. Plastic surgery, in such a scenario, helps in restoring a youthful appearance to the eyes. Blepharoplasty is a process using which excess of fat, skin and muscle from the eyelids are removed.

For blepharoplasty, the patients are usually briefed about their eating and drinking habits inorder to facilitate a smooth surgery. Prior to the surgery, patients are asked to avoid certain medications like aspirin and Vitamin E.
Local anesthesia is usually used during the eyelid surgery. Anesthesia and oral sedatives numbs surrounding area of the eyes, making the patient relaxed and insensitive to the pain.

Motherhood is the most beautiful feeling they say. Max Health Care understands your concern and your wishes involving motherhood and parenthood. For those who are unable to conceive naturally,
Max Health Care offers options for assisted conception and reproductive medicines.

One of the common procedures pertaining to assisted conception is IVF- In-vitro fertilization. IVF is also referred to as test tube baby procedure and has been extremely popular ever since 1978 when the world’s first IVF baby took birth. Success rate of IVF is extremely high as there are 50,000 to 100,000 sperms used in a test-tube to assist in the conception and fertilization of the egg. In-vitro fertilization involves egg or ovum being fertilized outside the body and the fertilized embryo(s) being transplanted into uterus of the mother.

Another breakthrough and advanced procedure in the field of assisted conception and IVF, is Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), first used in the year 1992. ICSI is a revolutionary medicinal procedure that helps in overcoming sperm inability to fertilize ovum/egg. In case of ICSI, sperm is injected to the egg cytoplasm to facilitate egg fertilization.

Some of the steps followed in IVF and ICSI procedures include, hormonal injections for ovary stimulation to obtain eggs, follicular development being tracked with the help of sonology and blood tests, semen collection, retrieving of eggs from ovary follicles under some form of anaesthesia, laboratory fertilization of eggs, embryo transplant into the uterus of the mother.

Though, IVF and ICSI are safe and successful procedures. Age Related Macular Degenration (ARMD)

Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) signifies degeneration of macula, the most sensitive part present in the retina of the eye. People are more susceptible to ARMD with progressing age. People over 50 years of age are more prone to ARMD.

ARMD affects one eye at a time and then gradually progresses. It is of two types- Dry ARMD and Wet ARMD. Dry ARMD is usually common and consequents to slow degeneration of the macula while Wet ARMD is not that common. Wet ARMD results in abnormal blood vessel formation which consequents haemorrhage underneath the macula of the eye.

An ophthalmologist can diagnose and detect ARMD during retina evaluation. ARMD results in gradual loss of vision at the centre of the eye but allows better vision from the corners and sides of the eyes. Thus, activities like reading and working closely on anything become difficult to be carried out without support of special low vision aids.

Dry ARMD does not cause blindness but causes deterioration in vision. The wet ARMD causes a fall in vision and may consequent to complete loss of vision. Damage to macula causes loss of vision. The exact reason of degeneration of the macula is unknown. Although some of the risk factors include age, genes, sex, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases.

Straight lines appearing to be distorted at the centre of the vision, white patch in the centre of the vision, change in perception are some of the symptoms of ARMD.  Since, ARMD affects slowly and progresses over time, the need for a routine eye check up becomes inevitable. Trust the experts when it comes to your eyes. Max Eye Care has a team of distinguished doctors who work towards providing the patients with supreme care and cures, dedicatedly.

We are a team that cares!

All you need to know about skin grafting

Skin grafting is an aesthetic corrective that involves a skin patch from a healthy site on the body being surgically removed from one area and being transplanted onto another area on the body.

Apart from aesthetic corrective, skin grafting is also recommended incase when someone has extensive wounds, injuries caused due to skin burning or extensive skin loss due to infection.

There are some basic checkpoints that one would have to undergo before settling down for skin grafting. First and foremost, patient’s family history is taken into account to understand the skin tendencies and allergies of the patient. Also, there may be a need to get a blood test as per the instructions of the surgeon. As a part of the preparation for skin grafting, the wound site becomes an important area to determine if the procedure would be successful or not. The patient may, as a part of the preparation, be prescribed antibiotics to be taken prior to the procedure.

The donor area or site of the body is usually a protected and an area hidden by clothes, like inner thigh area and buttock area. The donor site selection is dependent upon the visibility and colour match of the skin and the site.

The graft or patch of skin is spread on the recipient area and is held there gently with the help of a padded dressing or by small stitches. The donor area becomes raw and thus is protected and covered through a sterile dressing to avoid infection one to two weeks.
Skin grafts have to be protected and supported using a crepe bandage or a stocking and have to be lubricated with mineral oil to avoid contracture and cracks.

There are several complications that may arise if skin grafting is not performed with the expertise that’s required. In order to avoid such complications and problems, trust none other than Max Institute of Aesthetic & ReconstructiveSurgery. Max uses advanced technologies to offer detailed evaluation and personalised treatment to suit the needs of the patients.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall who is the Slimmest of them all??

We want to have the cake and eat it too; I mean to say we want to gorge on food and stay slim too now that’s not possible. We have so many options of having our food and there is food available in every corner, so it is quite obvious that we can’t resist ourselves.  There are a lot of people who need to lose weight and who are conscious about their weight and how they look.
The issue of weight loss is a growing concern among many people and even teenagers can’t stay far behind. You can see one in five in today’s time suffering from the problem of obesity and for that itself there are bariatric surgeries that are increasing in number by the day and it has become highly common in today’s time too.
Weight loss surgeries and bariatric surgeries have become the norm of the day now, the fast and easy method to reduce weight in no time. In this your stomach will be reduced in size and the food bypasses the small intestine and makes you full sooner. Typically, a gastric bypass patient can only eat a fraction of the food he could prior to the surgery, and overall calorie consumption is greatly reduced.
In bariatricsurgery a small silicone band commonly known as the lap band is secured around the top portion of the stomach. The band forms the pouch at the top of the stomach, like with gastric bypass surgery the gastric banding creates a situation where the patient can only eat a small amount of food.
So after getting this surgery done you surely can stand in front of the mirror and ask mirror mirror on the wall who is the slimmest of them all and you will get the answer which you have been waiting to hear so eagerly.

I can share a personal experience of mine that my father led a very free lifestyle until one day he was struck with some blockages in his heart due to his smoking habits. That day he quit smoking, but the question that arises is that why do we wait for something this dangerous to happen and then take our steps back? Why can’t we lead a healthy lifestyle beforehand so that we don’t give any stress to our body, ourselves and to our family.
A heart attack is a very serious thing and should not be taken lightly, it occurs in the form of a heart blockage or in the arteries around the heart, which results to a restricted flow of blood to the heart. When a heart attack occurs the heart surgery should begin within an hour. Heart attacks are the number one reason for the number of deaths in the world. So heart surgery should be done as soon as possible to revert back any kind of dangers.
Due to the stress level and other tensions in life or for being cool in a group of friends whatever the reason might be but youngsters of today are focusing more on drugs and other forms of substance abuse. They do not realize that they are wreaking havoc in their life’s and to their health too.
Due to this problem the whole process of intervention came into scene, many of us won’t even know what exactly an intervention is as it is a lesser heard term. An intervention is the facilitation of a well intentioned confrontation between groups of people who have a confrontation to the addict. The entire process is organized, arranged and managed by an interventionist who ensures that with their motivation levels they can prove to be of some help to those people. Take care of your health as that is the only investments that you can have for your life.

Troublesome Joints can Wreak Havoc in your Life

To get troublesome joints either you have to be a sports freak or you have to be slightly on the ageing side. It can happen to those too who are injury or accident prone, whatever may be the reason, and you know that you need to go to the doctor. But you are not sure which one, as there are different specialists in the field and you don’t know which one would be apt for you.
A few years back while I was in college I used to love playing basketball and every morning I would be on the court to give a few dodges and goals. Actually we had a match coming up with our rival college and I was practicing hard to give them a hard time. So my team was practicing by playing some matches and here I was trying to give a goal to my team and as soon as I jumped for doing the basket here I was on the floor with my sprained ankle.
I knew I was going to be in a big mess and this was my chance to prove myself but I just couldn’t move my legs and what with the match coming up next week.  So we rushed to an orthopedics center and told the orthopedic that is there any way that I can be part of this match and play as soon as possible. I was prepared to hear a no for an answer from him but luck favored me or has technology advanced so much that the doctor told me that in a week you would be giving tough competition to your rivals.
Technological advancements and medical research has made orthopedics departments the most favored place to visit, when you injure yourself while playing any kind of sports or you need to get the joint replacement surgery due to some accident. As we age our joints tend to get weak and it may require total jointreplacement surgery to cure ourselves completely. But with advancement in technology and various specialized techniques the recovery time has reduced drastically.
So now you can figure out that in a week’s time with the right usage of technology and proper care who scored the maximum goals and who won the match.

Most of the times when I get up in the morning I get those puffy eyes, and it seems as if I have cried the whole night and people always ask me is there some problem with you? Thanks to my unmanageable pair of eyes I have to make all sorts of excuses in front of them.
I have a friend of mine who faces a same situation but for a different part of her body i.e. with her teeth and she is so conscious about her teeth, as there are some patches and spaces in between that she hardly smiles showing her teeth. We all compromise on things and take all the stress on ourselves but we never think about taking those corrective steps.

Your eyes would start giving you signs and you will know how much eye care you need, as due to fatigue there would be redness in eyes, bags and dark shadows.
To make those puffy eyes look good we should always take time out to rest our eyes for ten minutes every day. For our eye care we can do some small things like before sleeping we should remove all makeup from our eyes as it is not healthy to sleep with make up on your face. Make sure while reading at night you have adequate amount of light so that you need not strain your eyes.
Now let’s talk about some tips that we can follow to give that beautiful smile to the world and after reading this may be my friend too would smile open heartedly after following these steps. Whether we have healthy teeth or not we need to make sure that we go for regular dental care check- ups to our dentist.  But there are some steps that we can all take for our personal dental care as routine like brushing our teeth twice and flossing it on a routine basis. As a regular dental check up consumes less time and it does not even cost much.
So by adopting this routine into our lives we can surely prove to the world that we are no less and we can proudly flaunt what we have.

Increasing Confidence with Tummy Tuck

The consumerism driven generation of today that considers size zero as an ideal body size raises doubts and reduces confidence in one’s body if it is not in line with the set societal norms. Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that changes the shape of your abdomen; however it is not a procedure to lose weight. A tummy tuck removes excess fat localized in the body and the excess skin is also removed. This procedure is different from liposuction, in which there is excess fat to be removed but not excess skin.
This operation is performed under the affect of anesthesia. During the tummy tuck operation, there are two cuts made — one horizontal, running across the stomach above the pubic area and one around the navel. After freeing the skin from navel area, the vertical muscles of the abdomen, also called rectus muscles are pulled, stretched and repositioned. This tightening and repositioning of the muscles reduces waistline. After this is done, the excess skin is removed and the remaining is wrapped back over the muscles and stitched into place. Although, the size of abdomen is reduced, one should note that these procedures are not a substitute for a regular workout of healthy diet.
The after effects of operation can be swollen abdomen and some general discomforts, like not being able to walk straight, but these effects wear off after some days of hospitalization and medication. However, there will be an inverted T-shaped scar on the abdomen which will become lighter with time.
People should not go for such procedure unless the size of their body is hampering with daily activities of life. A good doctor must be consulted before going under the knife!

Fighting cancer is possible now

A decade back, cancer was a dreaded disease and people took it as a synonym for death. But with the advancements in the field of medicine, the cure for cancer has been possible. Cancer usually starts with a tumor or a lump in one part of the body (benign tumor), in which uncontrolled and unspecialized growth of mitotic cells may occur at a later stage. If the tumor starts spreading out, it is called metastasis and the stage of cancer is called malignant cancer.
Cancers are named after the type of mitotic cells they originate from. For eg. The cancer of epithelial cells (covering of various glands) is called carcinoma, cancer of connective tissue (bone, cartilage, nerve) is referred to as sarcoma and cancer of bone marrow is called leukemia or lymphoma. Signs of cancer are evident but they can be ambiguous also. So one should check out for unusual lumps in the body, signs of ulceration, wounds not healing quickly, excessive sweat during night, weight loss and anemia. Although these signs are non-specific, people should not ignore them. A histological examination is carried out to confirm the occurrence of cancer.
Present day cure of cancer involves radiosurgery, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic radio surgery and Radiation Therapy (SRS, SRT) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) among others. Max Cancer Centre is equipped with these technologies and we can assure you a personalized and healthy healing- right from cancer screening, to its early detection and to multi-disciplinary treatment. So now there is no need to be fearful about this diseas. Approach the right doctor and start with the healting process. The earlier you realize your condition, the faster the action and the quicker the healing process!

Max Clubfoot Programme

Health issues and body malfunctions in children are very hard to diagnose. The reason behind this is simple, which is the fact that children are unable to express discomfort and judge trouble that they might experience as well as adults do. The smaller the child, the more the attention required towards him/her. The treatment in children also depends upon the kind of disease that the child has. Some physical malfunctions and deformities in children are by birth while some are acquired after birth.
Clubfoot is one such problem by birththat is found among children. Affected child is born with a clubfoot. Clubfoot is also called Congenital TalipesEquinoVarus and is said to be occurring in one among every 1000 children. In case of clubfoot, the foot of the child is visibly affected, the heel being drawn upwards while sole is inwardly turned.
Clubfoot is more common among boys than girls and the cause behind the disease is not so much known. The treatment of a clubfoot has series of stages. The first stage involves initial plaster casts. The second stage involves a 23 hours a day bracing for the 3 months from the birth of the child.  Maintenance is the third stage in which bracing is done during nap time of the child till the age of 3-4 years.
Max Healthcare has a supportive clubfoot programme to ease the pain of parents of the children with a clubfoot. Max clubfoot programme involves- antenatal counselling of parents, precise diagnosis from Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon, supply of indepth information about clubfoot and past records of the child. Max understands the gravity of the concern of the parents and therefore has a proper contact/helpline for daytimeaccess for parents to help cope with the problems that arise as they take care of their child during the treatment stages. Take care!

Surgery To Strengthen Knee Surgery

Revision knee surgery or revision knee replacement is performed when an artificial prosthetic that was put in place of an original bone to relieve the pain wears out over a period of time. Yes, even the prosthetics that replace a bone for natural movement in the body are subject to wear and tear. Made of sterile materials, these prosthetics have a life span of about 10-12 years. However, it may vary under individual circumstances. Revision knee surgery is one of the most common revision surgeries performed world over because our knees bear and redistribute most of the body weight. Every agile activity of life includes movement of knees; hence their rate of wearing out is faster than any other joint or prosthetic.
The reconstruction surgery of this joint involves replacing the damaged bone with metal and plastic components shaped like knees to restore the normal hinge motion. The old metal prosthetics are removed and the damaged bone at the end of the fermur is reshaped. If the bone is weak then the surgeon uses bone grafts to strengthen it. Grafts can be of two types- autograft or an allograft. In former, the bone tissue is taken from a particular site of the patient’s own body, whereas in the latter, it comes from a donor. A revision or replacement joint surgery is trickier because it requires the expertise of correcting an already performed surgery. So choose your doctor wisely before you go for treatment. Max Healthcare has a dedicated team of doctors who impart extra care to all the patients. The doctors here have impeccable success record and are specialized in the field of orthopedics.

No Teething Troubles Here

Flashing a smile should be as easy as saying cheese. Shouldn’t it be? Afterall, smile is one of the most attractive things about an individual’s personality that others take notice of. Clean, straight white and shiny teeth can light up anyone’s heart! Just like you can get beautiful hair by rebonding these days or acne free face by laser treatment, cosmetic dentistry can give you a perfect smile.

One of the major aspects of dentistry in India is orthodontics. This includes treatments such as implanting braces made up of metal or ceramic on the teeth or on the palatal site of the mouth ie on the underside of the teeth, correction of crowded teeth and bleaching among others. Although braces can be put in several ways, a good dentist will propose the use of braces with self ligating brackets rather than the old conventional braces. The former do not have elastic bands or ligatures and look more aesthetic. Also, self ligating brackets employ a slide mechanism to hold the archwire in place, thereby reducing the pressure wielded on teeth. Or if you don’t want to go for braces at all then you can go for invisalign which is basically a series of transparent and removable teeth aligners.

Among common toothsurgeries, root canal treatment is widely performed. It is done to alleviate pain in the oral cavity due to the infections of the pulp of the tooth. The dentist drills to the infected pulp, removes it, then drills further into the nerves and takes them out too and lastly fills the cavity with an inert material. All the canals under a tooth have to be cleaned in order to make this procedure successful. So, if you are looking for a good dentist Max Healthcare is where your search would end.

Eyes-wise Decision

These days most of the people are living a sedentary lifestyle. The work involves sitting in front of the computer screen for a long period of time. Even kids these days remain engrossed in laptops either for studies or for entertainment. Watching television for a long period of time from very close too is a habit seen in many people. Other than this, people are seen reading books, newspapers and journals in dim light or in wrong postures. Many kids do their homework lying down on the bed or floor. These are some lifestyle habits which could affect one’s eyesight power in the long run.

But how do you know that your eyes need an aid for reading? One complains of constant headaches and fatigued eyes as the sight becomes hyperopic. The objects at a distance which were seen clearly earlier begin to appear blurred. Another important symptom is that the eye does not recover quickly from bright lights at night. So if you are seeing halos around an object for a long time after you enter a dark room from a brightly lit room, you might want to consult an optician. Today, advance care is available for almost every eye problem and Lasik is the most common one to correct eyesight.

However, prevention is better than cure. It’s advisable to increase the intake of healthy foods in your diet to maintain good eyesight. Vitamins A, C and E improve vision. Hence, foods like eggs, garlic, almonds and carrots should be taken in optimum amount. Apart from this, green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach etc. ensure overall health of a person besides protecting vision. It has been found that spinach contains antioxidants called Lutein and Zeaxanthin that are crucial for protecting the eyes from degeneration.

Infertility in Men

Infertility is increasingly becoming a cause of worry among urbane couples. Doctors agree that a large number of couples these days face problems of natural conception due to the stressful work environment, increased intake of junk food and an irregular lifestyle. If a woman fails to become pregnant after more than one year of pregnancy test, then usually both husband and wife are checked for infertility tests. Hormonal imbalance in women (either due to dysfunction of pituitary gland or tumor in the ovaries) of can lead to problems in conceiving. In men, low sperm count is the most common cause of infertility followed by erectile dysfunctions. Some males may have blockage in their reproductive tract which obstructs the path of sperms.

Thus, semen analysis using advanced spermiogram reveals a lot about the cause of infertility. Apart from this, advance ultrasonological diagnosis gives a comprehensive understanding of pathology. According to the report, treatment is prescribed. In some cases, retrograde sperm retrieval needs to be done where sperms are retrieved from urine post ejaculation. Max also has a reliable semen bank which offers freezing and storing facilities of semen in liquid nitrogen at an ultra low temperature. Donor semen can be used for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

When a couple comes to MaxHealthcare for check-up, we ensure complete confidentiality of our patrons and the councelling includes detailed review of the patient’s history, medical examination of reproductive health and infertility evaluation to pinpoint the accurate cause of the problem. So if you have been waiting to welcome a bundle of joy in your life for too long, wait no more and pay us a visit!

Club Feet in Babies

Sometimes babies are born with a minor orthopedic deformity in feet where the sole of the foot is turned inwards and the heel is drawn up. This is referred to as club foot and when babies grow up, they tend to walk on their ankles and bend on their sides while walking. Club foot is reported in one out of every 1000 live births and the cases are more commonly found in boys than in girls. The deformity can be diagnosed either at birth or at antenatal scan during pregnancy. It can however be successfully rectified without surgery if its treatment begins immediately after the birth as doctors can advantage of the suppleness and elasticity of tissues in the newborn and give it a correct shape.

MaxHealthcare runs a sub-speciality programme in correcting club feet by dedicated orthopedic doctors. The doctors ideally prescribe casts and plaster treatment within two weeks of birth. Ponseti method is the most widely accepted method to correct club feet. A plaster cast is put on the feet six to eight times to achieve a correct degree of manipulation. As a result, the displaced bones are gradually brought in a normal alignment. This process can take around two months of bone and ligament manipulation. Surgery can also be done to adjust the tendons, ligaments and joints in the foot and remove all the deformities at the same time. This is usually performed when the baby is 9 months old. However, the foot might tend to return to its club foot position post surgeries if proper casts and braces are not used to keep the foot in place until one year post surgery.

Once these procedure are done, the baby when grows up, can run and walk normally and wear normal shoes and lead a perfectly normal life!

Rerouting Stomach to Healthy Path

Obesity is generally considered as a disease of the well to do. A large percentage of population in the developed countries is suffering from obesity and its related problems. However, in the present era, this condition is emerging in developing countries too.  Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in India, with morbid obesity affecting five per cent of the nation’s inhabitants. The main reason for this is the increased consumption of unhealthy, processed food which has become more accessible as a result of foreign direct investments of eatery outlets in India. Genetically, Indians are susceptible to weight gain around the waist. In a study conducted by National Family Health Survey, Punjab was ranked as the state with 32 percent of obese people, followed by Kerela and Goa.

Owing to this trend, Bariatric surgery, commonly known as weight loss surgery, is becoming a commonplace at hospitals. This operation is performed on people who have body mass index (BMI) more than 40. The surgery involves stapling the stomach or re-routing small intestine to a stomach so as to decrease the absorption of nutrients and minerals by the body. This results in long-term weight loss, recovery from diabetes and improvement in cardiovascular condition.

The Institute is the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at MaxHealthcare is aptly equipped with state of the art equipments and the surgery is performed by minimal access techniques so that the patient recovery is quicker and post-surgical complications are less. The department is so skilled that the head of the institute, Dr Pradeep Chowbey, was featured in the Limca Book of Records in from 2000 to 2009 for performing the largest series of laparoscopic biliary surgery (over 50000)!
