What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammoplasty. It involves removal of breast tissue and reshaping of skin to reduce the size of the breasts.

Breast reduction is done incase one suffers from back aches and neck pains. Incase one is unable to breathe properly and one has stasis ulcers, grooves in the shoulders due to the bra straps, numbness in any portion of the breasts and the chest area due to the excessive weight, breast reduction becomes a recommended option. Breast reduction also serves a purely aesthetic purpose for people who dislike their breast size and wish to have perfect looking breasts. Physical discomfort and psychological problems due to one’s appearance are the reasons that people go through breast reduction for.

Women who choose to undergo breast reduction should have realistic expectations from the surgery. Lactating mother or women intend to breast feed should not go for breast reduction. Women who have undiagnosed lumps or masses in breasts, are severely obese, irregular mammograms, are diabetic, have blood clotting disorders, and have wound healing disorders are not candidates fit enough to undergo breast reduction. Lactating mothers, smokers and women suffering from circulatory disorders are not at all good candidates.

Preparatory guidelines are given to the patients by the surgeon prior to the surgery. During the surgery, excess of glandular tissue and fat is removed. The nipple is moved to a new position, skin from the breast sides are brought down around the areola and a rounded contour of the breast is created.
