About LUNG CANCER

Lung cancer develops in the airway lining. There are multiple types of cancers that are based upon biological behaviours. These are small cell carcinomas (also called oat cell carcinomas) and non small carcinomas (include, squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma, bronchiolo-alveolar cell carcinoma etc.

Some of the main causes of lung cancer include- smoking, contact with nickel, chrome, asbestos, steel and coal gas processing. Exposure to radiations emitted from uranium, fluorspar, haematite also increases cancer possibilities.

In India, lung cancer is the most common form of cancer. Lung cancer symptoms can not be gauged at immediately, they are vague and look similar to that of other benign infectious diseases. Some of the symptoms of lung cancer are- fatigue, weight loss, wheezing, difficulty in swallowing etc. Some other symptoms may appear to be unrelated to the lungs and may be so due to the spread of the lung cancer to other body parts as well. Therefore, patients have to be alert and get tests done if the symptoms persist over 4 weeks.

Diagnosis of lung cancer includes a physical examination and investigation into smoking habits and work history. Furthermore, the patient would have to undergo a chest X-ray, CT scan, Sputum Cytology, Bronchoscopy, Fine-Needle Aspiration, Positron Emission Tomography, MRI Brain, Mediastinoscopy, bone scans, breathing tests etc. After the disease is staged, the treatment follows. The treatment includes surgical correctives, radiotherapy, chemotherapy.
